2012 here we come!

Righty ho! (Oh yes I’m sounding more and more English after my 12 years in London) So it’s 2012 (remember to write the correct year on those cheques!).  ; )

I must say I’ve been neglecting my blog lately but I hope to be more on top of things in the coming year.

Things have been moving for ilanaDesign however. I sold to shops, had commissions and have been meeting interesting and wonderful people in the industry and forming my ‘jewellery family’. Ooooo warm fuzzies now! Like sipping a hot toddy, mmm mmm.

At the moment I’m scrambling to get my display ready for the Xobo Shop located in South Kensington on the very posh Walton Street! Oo la la baby. This shop is up and running as we speak, with the very exciting new furniture line from Xobo Design, and the photography of brilliant portrait photographer Robert Taylor  (stay tuned to my blog for more…).

Some of the great furniture includes the Oyster Wardrobe, this fantastic colourful wardrobe based on a gentleman’s travelling suitcase! How cool is that!

Xobo Oyster Wardrobe

Going forward, I have yet expansive plans for my Vase Ring. I won’t give that away just yet though! But I can say I’m excited about it.

So, I wonder now, what are YOUR plans for 2012? Yes you! You who is reading these words at this very moment! Get in touch, give me your news as I love hearing from you people out there!

In the meantime…

Looking oh so divine in my Snail Chapeau!

Lots of love to all of you and wishes for peacefulness within, togetherness, and whatever really, truly, deeply makes you happy!

Peace out,

ilana

Trickle trickle

And that, thankfully, is not the sound of my drains gone wrong and slowly overflowing (a non-fictional occurence), but rather, the motion of post-event sales!

Made in Clerkenwell turned out to be great for exposure. How interesting how things stay in peoples’ minds where they sit and cogitate and then translate themselves into sales!

I’m happy! So thank you to all who came and all who purchased and continue reading me here. There are new project ideas travelling through my grey matter at the moment…

Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb – An interactive playful ring with grit

Bespoke man's multi-wear thumb ring

Who out there remembers this great Dr. Seuss book (Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb)? I was an avid Dr. Seuss reader as a child (well, my mother read them all to my brother and I and we absolutely devoured them with excitement!).

This is a  bespoke ring with the brief being simply to make a thumb ring, in silver, that was specially made for my client with him in mind and that no one else would have.
That was pretty open, so I went a little further, and created a ring that can be worn 5 or more different ways [a multi-wear ring as I call it] so that he never gets bored (just as we never got bored of my mom reading the same Dr. Seuss stories night after night – each time feeling like it was the first!).

Being able to create a different look as the feeling grabs him, this ring becomes interactive and playful! (Again, the Dr. Seuss experience!) For example, just by spinning it to misalign it, gives it a whole other look.

The photos below depict some of the different ways it can be worn. I didn’t photograph it as a single band, but of course that’s one of the many options!

This image shows the ways in which it can be worn. But don't forget it can be worn singly as well!

And now to bring you behind the scenes with a couple of pics of the making and a few idea development sketches.

Hope you enjoy them…

Acid Rivers copper bracelets

These are from my new line of copper bracelets called Acid Rivers.
These look great worn over a black turtle neck sleeve. Or even try it over a violet, emerald green or fushia sleeve for real wow factor! I’m selling them now so do get in touch if you’re interested in making one of them yours.
I used copper as my material of choice  because I wanted a rustic feel to them that I think copper inherently possesses, and most importantly I love the way copper patinates. It takes so well to heat colouring as well as applied patinas. These bracelets were based on my copper Rivers bracelet that I made several years ago. I always planned to try them out in silver, but I finally decided that they would look richer, warmer, deeper and have more soul in copper than in silver.
Many people I know love copper and love to wear it, and I believe it needs a chance to shine just as precious metals do as it has a beauty and merit of its own.
In addition to this, copper has been used through the ages to alleviate a variety of health related problems, on all continents and throughout most cultures. Although the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties of copper have been recognized since ancient times, modern science is now expressing an increased interest into the function of copper in human health.
